The largest city square in the world.
Tiananmen Square in the city centre of Beijing is famous for its size and history.
It has a surface area of 440,000 m² - 880m by 500m and is the largest city square in the world. The square was officially inaugurated in October 1949. It includes the Gate of Heaven's Pacification adorned with a portrait of Mao Zedong, Mao's mausoleum and a sculpture.
But Tiananmen is best known for the violent repression of Beijing Spring on the fourth of May 1989. The demonstrations protesting against corruption and demanding greater democracy were brought to a bloody climax when the army opened fire on the crowd killing more than 3,000 people.
